I will make an entry for each day of class below where I will list what we did. At the bottom of the page I will include the handouts for assignments that were given in class if I have them available as an electronic copy.

Term 3

Jan. 7: We read silently for 15 minutes. I handed out reading logs for Term 3, and then I handed out the paper "What is MLA Style" for Notebook #21. We read the paper and completed a comprehension check on the information. We then started working on in-text citations and started a worksheet to help us practice in-text citations. The worksheet is due next time on Jan. 9.

Jan. 9: We read silently for 15 minutes. I introduced Mindfulness, and we did a breathing exercise. We then turned in the homework from last time, and I handed out an MLA flipbook. We went over how to do a works cited page in MLA format, and I handed out homework to complete a Works Cited page and email it to me before next class.

Jan. 13: We read silently for 15 minutes, and then we did a mindful eating exercise. After that, we started reading chapter 1 in Allyn & Bacon Guide to Writing, and we discussed the continuum of writing.

Jan. 15: We read silently for 15 minutes, and I did a book talk on the book In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. We did a short body scan, and then we read about role, audience, purpose, and presentation in the Allyn & Bacon Guide to Writing. I handed out the assignment for the rhetorical analysis essay. Your homework is to read the assignment and select a piece of writing (short story, poem, article, movie, song, etc) to use for the rhetorical analysis.

Jan. 17: We read silently for 15 minutes, and I did a book talk on When the Emperor was Divine. We did a short body scan, and then we read in Everyone's an Author on pages 27-32 and 209-213. I handed out the rubric for the Rhetorical Analysis Essay, and then we looked at and evaluated examples from previous years. We then started writing our own Rhetorical Analysis Essays, and the printed rough draft is due next Wednesday in class so we can do a peer edit.

Jan. 22: We read silently for 15 minutes, and I did a book talk on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We then did a mindfulness activity to practice just letting our thoughts be thoughts. Then we looked at some websites for examples of analysis essays, and we did a self-edit of the rhetorical analysis essay. For Friday, bring a typed printed copy to class.

Jan. 24: We read silently for 15 minutes, and then the rest of the time was spent completing two peer edits and finalizing the rhetorical analysis essay. If you finished, it should be turned in on Canvas.

Jan. 28: There was a sub, and you were supposed to read silently for 15 minutes then submit the rhetorical analysis essay on Canvas. We turned in the rubric and the rough draft of the rhetorical analysis essay.

Jan. 30: We read silently for 15 minutes, and I did a book talk on The Innocent Man. We then did a breathing exercise for mindfulness, and then we read the instructions for the Stasis Interrogation Essay. We read an example essay, and for notebook #25 we listed at least 5 issues that we would be interested in writing about. We then had about fifteen minutes to start looking for articles to use for our Stasis Interrogation.

Feb. 3: Snow Day!

Feb. 5: We read silently for 15 minutes, and I did a book talk on Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. We then completed a mindfulness exercise about our thoughts. We reviewed the questions for Stasis Interrogation, and you started creating a PowerPoint presentation to answer those questions prior to writing your essay.

Feb. 7: There was a sub. We read silently for 20 minutes, and then we spent the remainder of the period finishing up the PowerPoint for Stasis Interrogation. You will present your PowerPoints on Tuesday during class.

Feb. 11: We read silently for twenty minutes, and then I did a book talk on the book My Lady Jane. We then presented PowerPoint Stasis Interrogation presentations. Those who did not present will present next time.

Feb. 13: We read silently for twenty minutes, and I did a book talk on Grimm Lovelies. We did a mindfulness exercise on emotions, and then we continued the presentations of PowerPoint Stasis Interrogations. Those who did not present will present on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Feb. 18: We read silently for 15 minutes, and I did a book talk on The Library of Lost Things. We then finished presentations for the Stasis Interrogation essays. I handed out the rubric for the essay, we read an example, and we started writing the rough draft of the Stasis Interrogation Essay.

Feb. 20: We read silently for 15 minutes, and I did a book talk on Stalking Jack the Ripper. We then spent the remainder of the period working on the rough draft for the Stasis Interrogation Essay. We will do a peer review on Monday, Feb. 24.

Feb. 24: We read silently for 15 minutes, and then we read an example of the Stasis Interrogation Essay. For the notebook entry, we gave a grade to the example essay using the rubric I gave out last week. I assigned you numbers, and I gave each person a Stasis Interrogation to peer edit. If you did not finish the peer edit, you need to complete it as homework.

Feb. 26: We read silently for 15 minutes, and I did a book talk on Return to Exile. We then traded papers a second time for peer edits, and we spent the rest of the time doing a second peer edit. We will finish the final paper and submit it on Canvas next time.

Feb. 28: We read silently for 15 minutes, and I did a book talk on Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitler's Shadow. We then reviewed each of the sections for the Stasis Interrogation Essay, and we spent the remainder of the period finishing up the final copy. The final will need to be submitted on March 4 before midnight.

Mar. 4: We read silently for 15 minutes, and I did a book talk on Educated. I handed back the rhetorical analysis essays, and then I gave out a list of rhetorical terms and definitions. We read through the terms and discussed each one and how to analyze them in writing. I handed out the second rhetorical analysis essay with the rubric, and we had the last ten minutes to begin looking for an article to use for the second essay. You must have a title to analyze in class on Friday.

Mar. 6: We read silently for 15 minutes and I did a book talk on Woven in Moonlight. I showed an example of the rhetorical analysis, and we reviewed the RAPPEL organization that should be in your notebooks. The remainder of the period was spent writing a rough draft of the rhetorical analysis. You need to have a printed copy here next time.

Mar. 11: We read silently for 15 minutes, and then we did a session from Learning to Breathe. We then did a peer edit four different times by having four different people evaluate the rhetorical analysis for different areas. The first person evaluated voice and word choice; the second evaluated idea; the third evaluated organization; the fourth evaluated conventions, sentence fluency, and presentation. Next time we will work on revising and making changes.

Mar. 13: We spent the entire period revising the rhetorical analysis paper. We will do a second peer edit in class on Tuesday of next week.
